Software School (SS) was founded in November 2001 by integrating the academic strengths of ¡°School of Information Science and Technology¡± and other institutes of Sun Yat-sen University. In December 2001, it was approved, by the Ministry of Education, to be one of the 35 demonstrative software schools of China.
SS consists of the Department of Applications, the Department of Digital Media, the Institute of Computer Applications, and the Institute of Information Security Technologies. It has established 6 laboratories for different majors and 3 laboratories for the postgraduates.
There are 21 full-time faculty members (including 3 professors, 8 associate professors and 10 lecturers) and 55 part-time ones (42 from within the university and 13 from outside) in SS.
SS offers the following programs:
- Engineering Master¡¯s Program in Software Engineering
- Bachelor¡¯s Program in 5 majors, including e-government (co-offered with the School of Government), communication software, digital media, computer applications, embedded software and systems.
There are 1143 undergraduate students, 409 engineering master candidates in SS. SS plans to recruit 300 undergraduates and 200 postgraduates per year in the future, making a total number of students to 2000.

¡°Three Qualities¡± are creativity, team-working and professionalism. ¡°Six Abilities¡± are the abilities of analyzing and solving problems, communicating and collaborating, actively acquiring knowledge, efficiently managing projects, practicing, and competing in the world. ¡°Four Levels¡± are advanced programmers, system analysts, IT project managers, and IT enterprise strategists.
Experienced Faculty Members
The faculty members of SS consist of full-time teachers, scholars from prestigious universities and institutes within and outside China, and managers and senior technicians from renowned enterprises. There 21 full-time teachers (including 3 professors, 8 associate professors and 10 lecturers) and 55 part-time teachers (42 from within the university and 13 from outside). SS also hired 7 teachers from foreign countries. The part-time teachers from within the university mainly come from the School of Information Science and Technology. These teachers are highly experienced in teaching and doing projects. The part-time teachers from outside the university mainly come from the enterprises and research institutes. They have a lot of experience in software engineering; many of them are technical supervisors or project managers of software enterprises.
Cooperation with Industries
SS has established long-term cooperation relationship with industry giants like Microsoft, IBM, Oracle, Sun, HP, Cisco and BEA. It also has cooperation with Huawei, Guangdong Telecom and Digital China, etc., in the areas of job training, internship, technology sharing and topic research. SS has thus created a win-win-win situation for the school, the students and the enterprises.
Advanced Facilities
SS has established 3 laboratories for the postgraduates and 6 laboratories for different majors. The total area of the laboratories is 3995 square meters. At present, there are 895 sets of equipments with a total value of over RMB 40,060,000.
Brilliant Careers
Up until now, SS has recruited 1209 undergraduate students and 685 postgraduate students. In 2005, 51 undergraduate students graduated as bachelors, with a recruitment rate of 100% (excluding the students who would further their study). In 2004 and 2005, 244 postgraduates graduated; the recruitment rate was also 100%. Many of the graduates were recruited by the renowned enterprises like Huawei, Cisco, IBM, Asiainfo, Netease and Tencent.
